Life seems better shared. Once you found the person you want to share your experience with, you make efforts to keep them. Arguments and rough patches are part of the course. After all, relationships require hard work. However, there are those kinds of relationships which can be extremely harmful to our well being.

So what is a toxic relationship?

Relationship therapist Jor-El Caraballo said, If you consistently feel drained or unhappy after spending time with your partner, it could be a sign that things need to change.

While Dr. Kristen Fuller, a family medicine physician specializing in mental health in California, adds that toxic relationships are mentally, emotionally, and possibly even physically damaging to one or both participants.

A toxic relationship is identified by dominance, authority, insecurity, self-centeredness while a healthy relationship involves respect, love spell and compassion, and an interest in our partner’s growth and well-being. A healthy relationship is where we can be ourselves without fear, a place where we feel safe and secure. On the other hand, a toxic relationship is not a safe place. And many people risk their lives by staying in such a relationship.

What to do if you’re in a toxic relationship?

Many people believe that toxic relationships are doomed, but that isn’t always the case. If you wish to stay in the relationship, both of you will have to decide if it’s possible to work through the issues. Moreover, both of you have to show an attitude of openness and willingness toward making the relationship better.

Repairing toxic relationships will take time, patience, and perseverance. If you desire to improve your relationship with a toxic partner, you have to be willing to leave that relationship when nothing changes. Your happiness, peace, self-respect, and self-esteem should come first. Always remember you deserve to be cherished because you are worth it.
